Jasper Hawkes

Jasper Hawkes is a PhD student at St Mary’s University, Twickenham. His thesis seeks to examine the diplomatic career of Stephen Gardiner during the reign of Henry VIII. His research focuses on Gardiner’s various embassies abroad including to France, the Papal court, and the Holy Roman Empire. His thesis aims to combine political and cultural issues to further understand how inter-princely interactions worked in practice, and in particular the importance of themes such as honour, dynasty and European geopolitics. His wider research interests include diplomatic history and its methodologies, Tudor government, and the role of the Court. He completed both his undergraduate studies in History (2023) and his Master’s degree in Public History (2024) at St Mary’s. Jasper is also a postgraduate member of the Royal Historical Society.
